Be An Upstander

This week in our Cybersmart lesson we completed our videos about how to be an upstander - and not be a bystander.
We had some powerful messages on how to be an upstander.

We used Canva to make a video.
We ahve got the Edu version of Canva and can access lots of premium content.
We added our messages and then inserted images to support the message.
We animated the elements and added audio to our video.
Here is some of our work.

Keeping Games Fun and Friendly

Today in our Cybersmart lesson we talked about playing games online and how to keep them fun and friendly. Lots of us play Minecraft, Roblox and Fortnite. Lots of us use the chat bot to communicate with others while playing games online.

We watched a video that showed 2 friends playing a game together online. We thought about some of the things that happened in their game. We then looked a traffic light and what we can do safely when playing online games, what things would make us stop and think and the things that we would absolutely not do.

We used a Jamboard to put our ideas together. We were in teams and the whole class was using the Jamboard at the same time. You can view our Jamboard here.

Below are screenshots of each team's ideas.

Do you like playing games online? How do you make sure you are Cybersmart when playing online games?

Media We Use

Today in our Cybersmart lesson we were thinking about the media we use and all the different types of media there are.

We remembered how to use Remove Background and made a poster of the media we like to use.

Here is the start of your work.

What is Media? Jamboard Brainstorm.

This week in our Cybersmart lesson we were thinking about the different types of media there are and which ones we use.

We brainstormed on a Jamboard the media we use. We separated it into digital and physical and whether they made us sad or happy. It was a bit tricky working on a Jamboard together but we managed it in the end.

Here is our brainstorm. Do you use the same media as us? Would you add anything else?

Fridge Magnets

Do you know what a QR Code is?
We think everyone knows about QR Codes because of the Covid-19 tracing app and seeing them everywhere we go now.
Do you know what QR means in QR Codes?

Today in our Cybersmart lesson we found out about QR Codes and how to create them.
It is quite simple in Chrome.
We have created a QR Code for our own blogs today.
We also inserted an image of ourselves.
These will be made into Fridge Magnets and we will take them home.
We hope our families will then visit our blogs and leave a comment.
Here are our designs...

WHAKAAHUA | PHOTO Blog Gadget

Today in our Cybersmart lesson we created a quality blog post with our "About Me" Google Drawing that we started last week.  This is part of our learning about what information we can share online. We also need to have this information on our blog so readers know a bit more about us.

We learned how to start a new blog post, how to add a title to our blog post, how to put the labels on and how to embed our digital learning object using the HTML code.

After we had published our blog post we commented on other blogs.
We knew who to comment on by looking at our blogging teams.
You can see our blogging teams on our class site here.

Our mahi is in a blog post and is now in our WHAKAAHUA | PHOTO gadget as well. It is in the gadget so that it shows at the top of our blog all the time.

Here is a snip of Cooper's WHAKAAHUA | PHOTO gadget.

You can view our work on our blogs.

Our blogs are all listed in the right hand side of this blog.

Lacey's Toy Making

Lacey has spent some of her lockdown time making toys for her baby sister. She has made a Slidedeck so we can see how it is made. She has written some very clear instructions with pictures so we can see what is happening.

This is awesome work Lacey.

Last weeks   lockdown writing activity  was to tell us a recipe that they had tried. We have some great chefs in Room 9. Here are the yummy sounding recipes that children have shared.

I wish we could have taste testing too, they sound delicious.

THe children of Room 9 have been busy online learning this week. One of their tasks were to create an 'Alpha list" to show what life is like in their bubble. I am very pleased with the results, we have some busy children. Here are a selection.

For reading Kereu reading group task was to create a Wordle using words about electricty. They had to read a text and watch a video to find the electricity vocab.

Tuesday, August 10, 2021

We have been very busy in Room 9. While the Olympics were on we investigated a famous Olympian. We discovered that New Zealand has had lots of famous sports people. We made a slide to display the information.

Maths Quiz

Did you know that it is Maths Week?

Room 9 created a Maths Quiz in Google Slides. They used the basic facts that they are currently learning as the Maths for the quiz.

The students then concentrated on linking the right answers to a slide that prompted them to go to the next question. And link the wrong answers to a prompt to "try again". Room 9 worked with a lot of concentration to get the mahi done. Ka pai tō mahi!

Here are some of our quizzes to try...

Olympic Games Images

This week in our Cybersmart lesson we were creating images about the Olympic Games.
One task was to complete an Olympic Torch.
We used polyline and curve lines to trace over the image, flipped it horizontally, moved it into position then recoloured it.
Another image to create was a pictogram.
A tricky one was to trace over the Olympic Rings using the curve line tool and recolour them.
Take a look at some of our mahi from today.

Commenting on Blogs

This week in our Cybersmart lesson we were publishing quality blog comments.

We read the "Fake Food" post on our blogging buddies blog who are in
Room 5 @ Panmure Bridge School.
They created realistic photos of them eating food.

We wrote positive, thoughtful, helpful comments and published them on the blog post.
Click here to see their blog post and read our comments.

Have we been positive, thoughtful and helpful?

Matariki

Room 9 really out their imganitive skills to the test this week. We had been learning about the 9 stars of MAtariki.

Our task was to describe a star as if it was a human. We had to write about what they looked like, what might they wear and what their personalility might be like.

We had to write 3 paragraphs and insert them into a new slide under the star we wrote about.

They are amazing descriptions.

Matariki Stop Motion Animation #1

This week in our Cybersmart lesson with Mrs Torrie we were creating stop motion animations in Google Slides. To start we heard the story of "The Eyes of Tawhirimatea". Have you heard that story?

We were able to make the stars appear one by one in the sky. Some of us tried to put the stars in the correct position. Do you know all the names of the Matariki stars?

When we showed each other our mahi we found the "publish to the web" link and changed the timing of the presentation. We walked around the class and looked at all the presentations. Here is some of our work.

Ameya has got 9 stars in her sky...

Lacey has added the names of the stars to her presentation...

Jessica has made her stars all different colours and shapes...

Would You Rather?

Today we were learning how to comment on blogs.

We have to be positive, thoughtful and helpful.

We have to write it like a letter and we must remember to write our name at the end.

We are going to answer this sticky question today to practise commenting.

Which one would you rather? And remember to tell us why.

Today's Weather Forecast

This week in our Cybersmart lesson we had to make a weather forecast.

We used the camera app on our Chromebook and set the timer so we could get a photo of us standing. Then we had to remove the background using the online Remove Background site.

When we inserted our image we had to choose the icons to show the weather and use Mote to record ourselves talking.

Here is some of our work....

As part of PB4L we have discussing what a good friend is. Our task was to write a paragraph about a good friend. The first sentence had to be the main idea, then we adding supporting details.

Our writing challenge was to include the special sentences we have learning - simple sentences, red, white and blue sentence, and a w start sentence.

We used remove background after taking our photos and Motes to record our paragraphs.

I am really proud of the paragraphs children of Room 9 wrote.

Visual Mihi

This week in our Cybersmart lesson we created a Visual Mihi.

We talked about delivering messages with images without any words.

We also talked about using images that are labelled for reuse.

We need to only use images we have permission for.
We can find images to use in the Explore Tool in Slides.

We thought of 4 images to convey information about us that we can share online.
The only words on our slide were our name.

Take a look at some of our work on the following slides and
see if you can find out some more about us from the images we shared.

Smart Footprints

This term we are making smart decisions about our digital footprint.
This week we found out that your digital footprint is permanent.
Today we made smart decisions about what personal information we can share online.

We had to make sure we kept private information off our footprint.
We all agreed that we should never share our phone number, our address, our age and birthday and surnames online.
Do you agree with us?

Look at our smart footprints we created.

Build a Robot

Here are our robots that we created in Google Drawings.
Can you see who the Ninjas are?
They added more shapes to create ears, antenna and more.

Sustainable Coastlines

Last week some children in Room 9 were part of a beach clean up for Sustainable Coastlines. We went to Kaiti Beach, picked up lots of rubbish and bought it back to school. We then had to sort the rubbish into categories and weigh it. It was amazing how much plastic we found.

We now need to think about how we can stop plastics ending up on our beaches and hurting the sea life.
